Life can be overwhelming and sometimes you need to reset your mental and physical space to get back into alignment with your goals and intentions.
Stress and other emotions are great when they are happening at appropriate times but they can also wreck havoc on life. There can be moments in life when life is just overwhelming you. Have you ever felt like you are living in a fog or you just can’t get it together, but in reality nothing is really going wrong?
It may be time to do a reset of both your mental and physical space. I have been feeling the need to complete a reset but had no idea how or where to start. So after doing some research I wanted to share some steps I am taking to help me with a reset. I recommend you grab a nice notebook and write down the steps as you move through them. Move through the steps slowly. I did one step a day. The goals is to take your time with the steps so you can understand what you are feeling and struggling with.
Step 1: Identify someone who can help, if needed
Every once in a while we need to lean on others for support. If you are fighting with feelings of depression or anxiety then reach out to someone. Find someone who is willing to support you on this journey. Talk to a therapist if needed. If you feel like your thoughts and feelings are out of control then this should be your first step.
Step 2: Brain Dump
Completing a brain dump is an effective way to manage and sort the clutter in your mind. All you need is a pen and paper. Just start writing whatever comes to your mind. Don’t worry about it being neat and organized. Write out all your thoughts, feelings, responsibilities and anything that comes up in your mind. I am sharing some prompts below if you need help getting started.
- What have you been worried about?
- What has been causing you to feel overwhelmed?
- What has been causing you stress?
- What do you feel has been going wrong in your life?
- What do you feel is going right in your life?
- What would make you really happy?
- Did something go wrong with your day/week?
- What really worked out for you today or this week?
- What tasks never seem to get done?
- Is there someone you keep meaning to contact?
- Are there any big goals you keep putting off? Maybe you want to take up yoga or start a new fitness routine.
- Maybe there’s a part of your routine that really isn’t working?
Step 3: Take a step back and evaluate
After you complete your brain dump, walk away. Allow what you just wrote down to settle in. Maybe come back in a few hours or even the next day. Once it is settled in come back and evaluate everything you wrote down. Was was you wrote true? Are they self limited beliefs about yourself? Are there things you can change? How does what you wrote down make you feel? Take your time with this step. Make a separate page and write down your evaluations.
Step 4: Set Goals and Intentions
There is a difference between goals and intentions. A great way to reset is to first make sure you know the differences between goals and intentions. Next decide which would suit you better. You can do both or just pick one.
Goals: the desired result or outcome that a person sets out to achieve. The focus is on the future and external achievements.
Intentions: the specific set of actions or energy that you put into something. The focus is on the present. Intentions are lived everyday and independent of the goal but can help you achieve your goal. It is a chosen theme that allows you to create alignment in your life.
Once you decide on your goals and intentions…write them down. If you made goals decide on how you are going to achieve them. What steps are you going to take? If you made intentions how do you intend to incorporate them into your life.
I’ll share my intentions as an example. I decided to focus on setting intentions vs setting goals. I also focused on one worded intentions. I chose three words then I asked myself a question about these three words. I then wrote out an intention below the question.
Is what I am about to consume, whether it be food, liquid or anything else, is it nourishing my body or harming my body?
I intend to nourish my body & soul with nutrition that promotes health.
What is the intention in the action I am about to take and what do I plan to accomplish?
I intend to be intentional in my actions & thoughts.
Are the actions or words I am about to make coming from a place of grace and goodness or are they harmful and hurtful to myself or others?
I intend to be more purposeful & come from a place of love in my words.
Step 5 : Practice Positive Habits/Actions
Start to incorporate positive habits in your life that aligns with your goals and intentions. Small habits can equal big change over time.
Drink an extra glass of water today.
Add some extra fruits and veggies to a meal.
Take 5 minutes to breath and slow down.
Make a small to do list for the day.
Express gratitude to yourself and your body.
Keep positive energy and people around you.
Do not gossip or critize others.
Give a genuine compliment to someone.
Show appreciation to someone.
Step 6: Love Yourself Unconditionally
This can be so hard to do. Especially, if you are hard on yourself and expect a lot from yourself. But this is necessary! Love yourself unconditionally. You are a beautiful, love-able person who deserves forgiveness and happiness. Love yourself when you fall, love yourself when you make an error, love yourself in moments of sadness and frustration, love yourself in moments of happiness and joy. Love yourself and accept yourself through this present struggle and have faith that this current frustration will make you a stronger person!
So if you are in need of a mental and physical reset I hope you found this post helpful and enlightening.
